Then, as I started playing more and more, (culminating this past week), I realize that poker is a very difficult (and somewhat miserable) way to make a living.

I can't tell you how many thousands or even tens of thousands of hours that I've spent playing poker with nothing to show for it. And those lost hours are something that I'll never be able to get back. (and I'm only 18).

I'll be attending university in September (for math/finance) and I was hoping to play poker during those next few years as a way to make a living.

I want/wanted to be a winner at poker, and have put in many hours of study, but sitting in front of a computer screen for 9-12 hours, only to breakeven or even lose 10+ buyins is frustrating as hell.

I decided to post it here, seeing as the advice is generally alot better than in other parts of the forum.

I know that ultimately only I can answer this question, but I'm looking for feedback from other people who are in, or have been in, similar situations.

I'm leaning towards calling it quits, as most pros probably don't make over $100K, and yet there are so many other professions (within the realm of entrepreneurship and financial management, which I someday hope to enter) that do.

In other words, it seems alot more +ev to be the operator of a poker site (or any business for that matter) than a player.

IMHO, gambling is fun, and for good or bad, it can be addictive as well. If you gamble from a budget set aside for that purpose, and stay within preset parameters, have a blast. If you are starting to spend the food, housing, electricity money then you are sending yourself a message. Hopefully you can receive and process that message.

Don't feel sorry for yourself, as that is a cry for "someone notice me", someone tell me I am of value...as you continually gamble chasing the mirage of success. ever seen a firefighter shoot the water on the roof when the fire is inside? They shoot the water on the ~cause and not the ~effect. If you continue to "feel" or "emotionalise" or do anything except ~stop doing what is harming you (drugs, girl/boy friends, money, and gambling) then you will never have or own the success.

If you are wanting to achieve things, do what is needed to achieve it. Don't think for a minute that you can just slow down or do it less, you must stop. Pay your bills first with cash or money orders. Gain new friends, shit on your old ones that are doing that to you right now. YOU must do what is in YOUR best interest. it is not a contest of popularity, a test of who loves you or who cheers you on as you head down a road to loose everything and have to "ho" your ass to pay bills.

Remember, I have lived in Vegas over 30 years now and have seen a lot. I am also a dead cold loving, ....realist.

If you want this drug, please continue to use it. No one will care or cry for yoyu as they drive by. Or, stop doing it by any means needed and drive by someone else, see them, and care. But then, this is also their same decision.

IMH perception, my view is not important. It only serves as a reference point. But if something is harming you and you are doing it, stop doing it

Being down only $2-3 K in six years is nothing.

There is a secret in Vegas on gambling... Remember that it is statistics and luck does not exist. Luck is your emotional connection to te statistical odds of something happening.

Quitting...that is a personal decision.
